Case study

Giving Arcwell Studio a position it could actually defend

An architecture practice that was winning work on reputation alone, and losing it whenever a prospect compared written proposals side by side.

Concept project: an illustrative case study, not a client engagement.

  1. Challenge

Arcwell described itself the way most practices do. The work was distinctive, the language was not, and that gap showed up at exactly the moment a client was choosing between three shortlisted firms.

  2. Opportunity

The practice already made a clear choice about the projects it took and refused. That choice had never been written down, and it was the most useful thing about them.

  3. Strategy

Interviews with recent clients and lost prospects, then a positioning built around what the practice declines rather than what it offers. Message hierarchy and tone followed, then the identity and site were rebuilt to carry it.

  4. Execution

Delivered positioning, a message framework, and a site organised around project types rather than services. Guidelines were written for the people who actually use them, not as a reference document.

The useful bit was being told what to stop saying. We had been describing ourselves like everyone else and could not see it from the inside. Proposals are noticeably easier to write now.
